Harry Binswanger earned his Ph.D. in philosophy from Columbia University in 1973. He has taught philosophy at several universities, most recently at the University of Texas at Austin. Dr. Binswanger was an associate and friend of Ayn Rand in her final years, and since 1986 he has served on the Board of the Ayn Rand Institute. He is the author of The Biological Basis of Teleological Concepts and the editor of The Ayn Rand Lexicon, a mini-encyclopedia of Objectivism. He co-edited the expanded second edition of Ayn Rand’s Introduction to Objectivist Epistemology. This is an extremely content dense book. There are 390 pages of text and they are packed with content that is not difficult but must be actively engaged. It is not light reading. It is so refreshing to read such a rigorously presented ideas and arguments. This book is definitely only for thinking people living in the real world and not confined to ivory tower word games.The book is a tremendous accomplishment and whether you agree with everything or not you at least have to consider it. I found most of it compelling and convincing. The arguments on free will were interesting but not quite convincing to me, but otherwise is brilliant. Overall the book is magnificent and I highly recommend it. Excellent description of fundamental topics. With depth and clarity, the objectivist view is clearly portrayed. The sections on the fallacy of the stolen concept are especially illuminating. If other philosophical schools of thought would commit to paper their ideas in such a clear manner, it would be an enormous benefit to the field as a whole, but unfortunately that is unlikely.
